HISTORY OF MILANO


Short story of Milan for Tito Livio; a first little celtic village was estabilished in VI century a.C.. The village was conquered by Roman legions in 222 a.C. The city of Mediolanum (this was her name) tried to grow up, allying a few years later with Cartagine which was enemy of Rome. But the Romans won, and in the end of the I century d.C. Milan became a part of Roman dominion. A few traces of Roman period remains in the city, but they are sufficient to document that public buildings were those of big city. Milan became capital of west Roman empire in 292 d.C, and it became an important centre for the new cristian religion. A lot of church of Milan, like S.Ambrogio, S.Eustorgio, S.Lorenzo has paleocristian origins. The barbarian invasion made worse the crisis of the empire. Milan was sacked in 539 and it lost the title of most important city in the region. The Romanbarbarian reign of Longobardi had capital in Pavia. From XI century a lot of city in the north of Italy became autonomous against the attempts of control of german emperors. Milan grew under economic aspect and it had a primary role in this moviment of independence. It ruled itself with democratic laws and building Palazzo della regione to decide its politic decision. The period of independence came to an end in 1277 when Visconti took the power. Visconti gave to Milan liberty under politic and cultural aspect. They started to built Duomo and Castello. In 1450 Francesco Sforza took the power. Sforza’s control made Milan one of the most rigolious cities in the renaissance. In this period Bramante and da Vinci went to Milan and were built the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and an hospital that now is Università Statale. Also were accelerated the costructions of Duomo and Castello. In the last years of Sforza’s control Milan became territory of fight among French and Spanish. Spain won and for two centuries the city remained under spansih control. The Spanish control wasn’t a moment of development because off the plague of 1630, but it was a good moment for the culture thanks to Borromeo family, infact a lot of important building, like Pinacoteca di Brera were built. The war of ‘600 and ‘700 made Milan under the control of asburgic dynasty. In the middle of VIII century the city had a period of strong resumption. The resumption involved the development of art, culture, laws, economy, school and also of science. Accademia di Brera was estabilished and were built Scala, Palazzo Reale, Villa Reale and a lot of private buiding. After the French revolution in 1789 Milan became under French control. It became capital of Repubblica Cisalpina and Regno Italico, which was ruled by Napoleone’s relatives. This period was intense under ideological and artistic fervour. This period gave to the city big public building like Arena. AustroUngaric that returned to the city after the fall of Napoleone weren’t reformer. In 1848 the city grew up against AustroUngaric and in 1859 the city entered under Savoia’s power, which became in 1861 Regno d’Italia. With the unification of Italy Milan was able to reach with more facility bigger markets and it tried to assert itself as the most important commercial centre of the new state. The city started to attract a lot of people from other regions of the country. But the growth created civil tensions that exploded in 1898 and fiercely repressed with cannonates. The new wealth caused the invasion of the centre of city by banks and insurances. Was also built the prison of S.Vittore. The fascist movement was estabilished in 1919. At the beginning the city didn’t do oppositions against the dictature. In this period were built very important building like Stazione Centrale, Triennale and Arengario. Milan was hardly hit by bomb of Alleates, but the city lead the national reconstruction. Now the city is the most important centre of industry, commerce, communication, design and fashion.
